01/20/2010 - Oxford, MS (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The 22nd-ranked Ole Miss Rebels figure to be tested this evening by the pesky South Carolina Gamecocks in a Southeastern Conference tilt.
South Carolina is 11-6 overall this season and 2-1 in SEC play. The Gamecocks suffered an 89-79 loss to Vanderbilt on Saturday, halting a three-game win streak. They head into tonight's affair with a 1-3 mark in true road games, not exactly cause for confidence.
As for Ole Miss, it is fresh off a 71-69 overtime loss to Tennessee on the road, a true heart-breaker from a team that has now suffered defeats in two of its last three outings. The Rebels are still a tremendously impressive 13-4 overall, but that mark is overshadowed by a 1-2 conference mark. Ole Miss has clearly played its best ball at home, posting eight wins in nine opportunities.
South Carolina holds a narrow 13-12 edge in the all-time series with Ole Miss, thanks to three straight wins over the Rebels.
Devan Downey has been the leading scorer for South Carolina in six consecutive outings, and he has scored at least 29 points in four of the six contests. Downey is averaging 20.9 ppg this season, and he is dishing out 3.8 apg to go along with his 55 blocks. Brandis Raley-Ross has played all 17 games for the Gamecocks, and he checks in with 10.8 ppg. USC is generating 77.0 ppg while limiting opponents to 69.7 ppg. In the recent loss to Vanderbilt, Downey exploded for 35 points on 12-of-21 shooting from the floor. Raley-Ross and Lakeem Jackson scored 11 points apiece in that tilt, and Sam Muldrow added 10 points. Unfortunately for the Gamecocks, they struggled mightily at the defensive end, allowing the Commodores to shoot a stellar 61.1 percent from the field. A 40-23 rebounding deficit also hurt the cause.
Warren is the leading scorer for Ole Miss with 16.6 ppg, and the dynamic guard has dished out 59 assists to go along with 23 steals. Terrico White provides 16.2 ppg for the Rebels, who are getting solid production from Zach Graham (11.1 ppg) and Murphy Holloway (10.1 ppg, 6.8 rpg). Ole Miss is generating 82.5 ppg through 17 games while limiting opponents to 69.5 ppg on 40.6 percent shooting from the field. Ole Miss played quite well at the defensive end against Tennessee on Saturday, holding the Vols to a 35.4 percent shooting effort. Unfortunately for the Rebels, they turned the ball over 21 times and connected on just 34.4 percent of their field goal attempts. Warren tallied 19 points in defeat on 5-of-18 shooting from the floor.

Now, it's okay to call the league hypocritical when it releases injury reports, which players have told me only helps bettors. And it's okay to mutter something obscene when the league pretends gambling doesn't help drive TV ratings and fan interest and put money in owners' pockets. But when it supports other forms of gaming? Big Deal. The Bears should put an orange "C" on every deck of cards dealt at Harrah's in Joliet; the Eagles should slap their logo on roulette wheels at the Borgata in Atlantic City; the Dolphins should hold training camp at the El San Juan in Puerto Rico.
Seriously.
The NFL's problem, when it comes to the gambling world, isn't hypocrisy, it's worse: The bosses lack vision. That's why the league is picking unwinnable fights in Delaware and taking pot shots from critics after making smart sponsorship deals. Roger Goodell and his gang are acting and thinking locally rather than globally, which is rare for them, especially compared to their professional (and amateur) counterparts.
The NBA held its All Star game in Las Vegas and David Stern's kingdom didn't crumble (although the town did bring plenty of players to their knees.) I'd say it's 6 to 5 and pick 'em that Lebron will make a road swing through Sin City before his career is over.
Even the NCAA College Football Betting is more progressive on this issue than the NFL. Several years ago Rachel Newman Baker, college sports' gambling czar, opened a dialogue with Vegas bookmakers to learn about how they do business. She's visited Nevada sports books, studied their operations and listened to how they regulate action. Now she knows she can expect a call from bookmakers, who lose money when sports are fixed, if they think something sketchy is going on in NCAA games. She's not in favor of sports betting, but, as she once told me, "I know it's not going away, either."
The NFL can't seem to accept that. And until it can find peace with the idea, it'll get flack, even when it's right.
