Antonetti to take over GM role with Tribe at end of season

02/18/2010 - Cleveland, OH (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Cleveland Indians announced on Thursday that Chris Antonetti will be promoted to the executive vice president and general manager's role after the 2010 season with Mark Shapiro being elevated to team president.

"A trademark of all successful organizations is stability," said Paul Dolan, who will assume the role of chairman/CEO at seasons end. "We are fortunate to have three respected and trusted leaders in Mark Shapiro, Chris Antonetti and Dennis Lehman who collectively share a passion for the Cleveland Indians."

Antonetti, 35, has served as Shapiro's assistant GM since 2002 and has been in the organization since joining the team as an assistant in the baseball operations department prior to the 1999 campaign.

The 35-year-old Antonetti, who turned down an offer to be the St. Louis Cardinals general manager after the 2007 season, has seen his role in player acquisition and contract negotiations increase in recent years, as Indians ownership assured him of their intentions for him to succeed Shapiro.

For Shapiro, whose contract runs through 2012, this upcoming season will be his ninth as the Indians' vice president and GM. Overall, he has spent 19 seasons in the Cleveland organization.

Shapiro joined the Indians in 1992 in baseball operations and later served as the club's director of minor league operations. He was then promoted to vice president, baseball operations/assistant general manager and spent three seasons in the position from 1999-2001.
